What is a Digital Footprint?

Whenever you browse the web, play online games, post photos, or search for videos, you leave behind a trail of information. Think of it like walking in wet sand — but online, your footprints can last forever!

Active Footprint (You Share It)
Things you intentionally post, upload, or send yourself:
  • Typing comments in game chats or forums
  • Posting photos, videos, or status stories
  • Filling out your public username or bio
Passive Footprint (Apps Record It)
Information collected in the background without you typing it:
  • Websites remembering which videos you watched
  • Apps tracking your general city or device type
  • Game servers logging what time you played

Passive tracking sounds invisible, but you have superpowers to keep your digital trail small and tidy:

1. Cookie Banners When a website asks about cookies, click "Reject Non-Essential" or "Only Required" instead of "Accept All".
2. Location & Mic Permissions Ask a parent or teacher to check your tablet/phone settings. Only allow games to see your location if strictly necessary.
3. Log Out of Shared Devices Always sign out of school Chromebooks and public computers so the next student doesn't browse under your account.
